The inaugural Skal Golf competition was thrilling in Lagos, with winners rewarded with mouth-watering prizes. Over 100 golfers from different clubs across the country participated in the one-day tournament held at the Ikeja Golf club.

Aroune Shamah made history as the overall winner at the maiden Skal international Golf tournament. The tournament put together by the Seventh Sports and Events was facilitated by Skal as part of efforts to bring the brand closer to the golfing community while promoting sports tourism.

Eighty-six gentlemen and 20 lady golfers from 13 golf clubs across the country competed at the tournament, which provided a relaxing and fun-filled atmosphere for participants to network and enjoy the game.

Nineteen winners were presented with plaques and trophies during the presentation ceremony, while sponsors were recognized for their support of the success of the maiden event.
Playing handicap 11, Aroune scored 77 gross and 66 net to emerge the overall winner beating Jimoh Ogundare and Bonny Obieze in second and third position, while Chichi Alamu emerged the best lady golfer overall with a score of 80 gross and 67 nets.

President, Skal Nigeria, and Group Managing Director of Dees Holdings, Daisi Olotu, affirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting sports tourism through the tournament while thanking the sponsors for supporting the event.

His words, “Today, we are all gathered here to celebrate friendship and to recognize distinguished golfers who have exhibited true sportsmanship and excelled in the just concluded golf tournament.

“To all the participants, no matter how good you get, you can always get better, which is the exciting aspect of this beautiful game. People are going home with Business class tickets to Washington Dulles. People are going everywhere worldwide provided it is through Kenya Airways destination including British Airways ticket to London return. We know what that means. You could be the winner”.

Olotu described it as a special event to re-launch travel and tourism post-COVID-19 and to appreciate those who have not only displayed the spirit of sportsmanship but have contributed to the event’s success.
Skal is a professional organization of travel, tourism, hospitality, and transport leaders worldwide, promoting global tourism and friendship.
It is the only international group whose members cut across travel and tourism sectors around the globe.
The first club was founded in 1932 in Paris by travel managers following an educational tour of Scandinavia. The idea of international goodwill and friendship grew, and by early 1934, there were already 12 clubs formed in five countries.

It was then that the idea arose to create a partnership that brings together all the clubs, intending foster collaboration and cooperation in the travel and transport sectors worldwide.
Skal came into Nigeria with the founding of the Lagos Club in February 1959, later forming the Abuja, Port-Harcourt, and extinct Ibadan branches.

Skal International has over 22 000 members in about 400 cubs throughout 84 countries. Most activities occur at the local level, moving up through National Committees under the umbrella of Skal International, headquartered at the General Secretariat Torremolinos, Spain.
